Central Nepal floods have killed at least 626 people, Nepal Police confirmed on Saturday. The disaster struck on August 26, 2026, along the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi river systems in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts near the Nepal-Tibet border. Rescue teams have resumed search operations after a brief pause caused by fresh flood fears.
This is one of the deadliest natural disasters to hit Nepal in decades. It has also triggered flood alerts across the border in India’s Bihar and Uttar Pradesh states.
What Caused The Central Nepal Floods?
Scientists are still studying the exact trigger. Experts say the flooding likely began with a glacier collapse. A huge mass of ice and rock broke off a mountain near the Nepal-China border. It crashed into a river below.
The impact sent a wall of water, mud and debris rushing downstream. Videos verified by international broadcasters show massive boulders tumbling through floodwaters in Nepal’s Nuwakot district.
The flood also created a new debris lake near where the Chhochen Khola river meets the Purepu Tsangpo river in Tibet. This lake overflowed slightly on August 28. That forced authorities to pause rescue work for several hours over fears of a second wave.
Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television later said the lake’s water level had dropped by about 10 metres. Officials called the renewed risk smaller after that. Rescue operations resumed soon after.
How Many People Have Died In The Central Nepal Floods?
The death toll has climbed steadily each day since the disaster began. Nepal Police said 626 people had died as of Saturday, August 29. Chinese authorities reported seven deaths in the Tibet Autonomous Region.
| Country | Confirmed Deaths | People Missing | Source (Date) |
| Nepal | 626 | ~2,426 (517 foreign) | Nepal Police, Aug 29, 2026 |
| Tibet, China | 7 | 554 | Chinese authorities, Aug 29, 2026 |
| Combined | 633 | Nearly 3,000 | Al Jazeera, Aug 29, 2026 |
Around 517 of the missing in Nepal are foreign nationals. They include dozens of American citizens. Nepal’s tourism authorities earlier said 384 travellers were reported missing from the Rasuwa area alone. This included 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens.
Why Is Gyirong Port Important To The Central Nepal Floods Story?
The floodwaters completely destroyed Gyirong Port. This was the main trade and tourism crossing between China and Nepal. Chinese state media reported no sign of survivors at the border crossing.
The port’s destruction has cut off a key route used by traders and Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims. It has also complicated rescue logistics on the Tibet side of the border.
Health officials in Nepal said one entire village near the border “seems to have been washed away.” They called the situation a dire need for support.
What Is Nepal Doing To Respond To The Central Nepal Floods?
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah, widely known as Balen, has led the government’s emergency response. He returned to Kathmandu after visiting flood-hit Nuwakot district.

“Authorities are operating at full capacity,” Balendra Shah, Prime Minister of Nepal, said in a Facebook post on August 27, 2026. He said the focus remained on helping the injured, locating missing people and providing relief to affected families.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, 13,295 security personnel have been deployed. This includes 7,250 police officers, 4,200 army personnel and 1,845 armed police force members.
Nepal’s helicopter fleet has flown 69 rescue operations so far. These flights had rescued 573 people as of the latest count, with vulnerable groups prioritised.
Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an official statement that “the Government of Nepal is utilising all resources at its disposal for the search, rescue and relief efforts for all those affected.” The ministry issued this statement on August 27, 2026.
Free medical treatment, emergency health centres and free voice and data services have also been arranged for affected citizens.
Are Indian States Bihar And Uttar Pradesh At Risk From The Central Nepal Floods?
Yes. Indian states bordering Nepal remain on high alert. Officials fear the flood’s impact could travel downstream into Bihar and Uttar Pradesh through shared river systems like the Gandak and Kosi.
India’s Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement that Bihar and Uttar Pradesh “have taken measures such as required evacuation and other support to local Indian communities near the India-Nepal border.” Both states have been advised to remain alert and maintain close monitoring, the ministry added.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of flood-hit border districts. This came as rising Gandak River levels triggered a state-level alert, according to Daily Pioneer.
Central Nepal floods have historically affected river levels in northern Bihar within days, given the shared river basins. Authorities in both countries are monitoring the situation closely to avoid a repeat.
How Has India Responded To The Central Nepal Floods?
India has offered strong diplomatic and material support since the disaster struck. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke directly with his Nepali counterpart on August 26, 2026.
“Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal,” Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, said in a post on X on August 26, 2026. He added that India was “ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal.”
Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office thanked Modi in a follow-up post on X for his “kind call and deep condolences.”
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed that India had already sent humanitarian aid. “India remains in close and continuous touch with the Nepalese authorities. We will continue to strongly support the ongoing relief efforts,” S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India, said in a post on X.
India dispatched 10 tonnes of humanitarian assistance initially. This was followed by an additional 37.5 tonnes soon after, according to official statements shared on X.
What Has The United Nations Said About The Central Nepal Floods?
The United Nations has flagged the risk of further disaster. Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, warned about the danger posed by the newly formed debris lake at the border.
“I think we should take those warnings very, very seriously,” Tom Fletcher said, referring to Chinese authorities’ alert about the lake. He added that the UN was using “very sophisticated” satellite technology to help anticipate any future disaster.
Several countries have also extended condolences. These include Bangladesh, Indonesia and members of the African Union, according to their respective foreign ministries.
What Happens Next After The Central Nepal Floods?
More rain is expected across flood-affected areas this weekend, raising fresh concern. Officials are closely watching the newly formed debris lake for any sign of renewed overflow.
Search and rescue work continues across Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts. Thousands of security personnel remain deployed on the ground.
Downstream, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh authorities continue monitoring river levels. Both states have standing plans for evacuation if water levels rise sharply.
The exact scientific cause behind the initial glacier collapse is still under study. Nepal is highly vulnerable to such disasters, given its fragile Himalayan terrain and changing climate patterns.
For now, the priority remains locating the nearly 3,000 people still missing across Nepal and Tibet. Families on both sides of the border continue to wait for news of loved ones.
