The Story of Sudan Gurung
In the wake of massive Nepal’s Gen Z protests, a name roared through. The name was Sudan Gurung, a 36-year old activist. He is also a president of one of the most popular and internationally support NGO group named as ‘Hami Nepal’. The group is recognized as a powerful voice one for young Nepali people in the country. Sudan Gurung was also used to be a DJ and event organizer that eventually helped him to make connections with people and to bring them together.
The Reason He’s in the News
Recently, Nepal government banned 26 major social media apps. And since these platforms were most used by Gen Z especially young students, they opposed the ban. This action was seen as a step of curbing and silencing the voice of Nepal’s citizens against Nepotism and deeply rooted corruption. Sudan Gurung’s Hami Nepal group came out and organized a silent protest against the government’s ban on social media.
A New Kind of Protest
The NGO’s group organized this protest and shared the details via Telegram and Discord. These both apparently submitted their registration application so they were not banned like others apps. They asked students to wear their school uniforms and carry books for this silent protest. This uniqueness of this protest that was not just against social media ban but against the corrupted rule of KP Oli Sharma’s government, related to mass audience and united them together.
The Result of His Actions
The protests grew so big that they led to the Prime Minister of Nepal resigning. Now, Sudan Gurung and his group are not just protesters. They have a say in how the country is run, including helping to choose the new temporary government. This shows that he has become a powerful new leader in Nepal, a voice for a whole generation that wants change.
This massive Protest by Gen Z forced the ruling ministers and Prime Minister to resign from their posts. Hami Nepal group recently, announced their first female PM Sushila Karki through voting via Discord channel. This crazy but commendable step of Nepal’s young citizens to vote via Discord shows the power of youth and social media platforms to the world.
