Bihar’s political drama just got a whole new chapter. JDU president and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has confirmed he’ll be stepping down from the top job and heading to the Rajya Sabha, ending what has been one of the most remarkable runs in Indian state politics. The man who has helmed Bihar for the better part of two decades is now setting his sights on Parliament’s Upper House, and the state is buzzing with speculation about what comes next.
The timing is striking. This declaration comes barely four months after Kumar changed into sworn in for a file tenth time period as Bihar leader Minister, a feat unmatched in Indian political history.
According to JD(U) sources, Kumar is expected to remain in the CM’s chair at least until the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 16, with his nomination filing expected around March 5, 2026.
What’s This All About the Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Seat?
To understand why this move matters, you need to go back to the 1970s. Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad, the late Sushil Modi, the late Ram Vilas Paswan, and Sharad Yadav. These were the five pillars of Bihar’s political landscape, all of whom cut their teeth together during the anti-Emergency agitation. They’ve been rivals and allies in various combinations ever since.
Here’s the fascinating bit: every single one of these leaders except Nitish Kumar has been a Rajya Sabha member at some point. Lalu Yadav and the late Sushil Modi both achieved the rare distinction of being members of all four legislative chambers , the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha, the state Legislative Assembly, and the state Legislative Council.
Nitish Kumar has been an MLA, an MLC, and a Lok Sabha MP, but the Rajya Sabha has always been the missing piece. This transition would complete that quartet, giving him a legislative record shared by very few Indian politicians. In that sense, the move is as much about legacy as it is about politics.
How Will Nitish Kumar’s Rajya Sabha Move Affect Bihar’s Political Leadership?
This is where things get really interesting , and complicated. Nitish Kumar’s departure is anticipated to trigger a first-rate reshuffling of Bihar’s political deck, one that might result in the primary-ever BJP-led authorities in the nation.
The JD(U) is reportedly navigating some elaborate internal waters during this transition, mainly with the question of what role Nitish’s son, Nishant Kumar, will play. An engineering graduate from BIT Mesra with no prior political experience, Nishant has been talked about as a potential “unifying figure” who could help preserve the party’s core Kurmi-Koeri vote bank. Some reports even suggest he could be appointed Deputy Chief Minister, what insiders are calling a “dramatic entry” into active politics.
As for the BJP, reports indicate the party may take the Chief Minister’s post under a revised NDA arrangement, while JD(U) could be offered two Deputy CM positions to maintain its political foothold in the state.
The numbers back this up. Bihar has five Rajya Sabha seats up for grabs, and winning one requires the support of 41 MLAs. The NDA , comprising BJP, JD(U), LJP (Ram Vilas), HAM, and RLJM , controls a combined strength of 202 MLAs in the Bihar assembly, making it virtually certain to win four of those five seats.
However, the fifth seat is a potential flashpoint. Upendra Kushwaha has been named the NDA’s candidate for that seat. A decision that LJP chief Chirag Paswan claims he wasn’t even informed about, raising the possibility of cross-voting if the issue isn’t resolved quickly.
Who Will Be the Chief Minister of Bihar?
The million-dollar question. Right now, three names are doing the rounds as frontrunners for the Chief Minister’s post.
Samrat Choudhary, currently Deputy Chief Minister and the man who holds Bihar’s home portfolio, is arguably the most prominent face. He’s the Number 2 in the current government, a former state BJP president, and one of the most influential BJP leaders in the state.
Nityanand Rai, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs in the central government, is another strong contender. A former Bihar BJP chief himself, Rai is a three-term MP and former MLA who brings both legislative experience and central government clout.
Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, a three-time member of the Legislative Council who has also served as Bihar BJP chief, rounds out the top tier of candidates. His legislative track record and organizational experience make him a viable choice.
There’s also the name of Sanjiv Chaurasiya, the MLA from Digha, doing the rounds in political circles, though he’s currently seen as a longer shot compared to the others.
What happens next will depend on backroom negotiations between the BJP and JD(U) leadership, with Delhi likely having the final say. As one leader close to Nitish Kumar reportedly put it, “Everything has been decided in Delhi.”.
Bihar is at a genuine crossroads. The man who defined the state’s politics for a generation is stepping aside, and a new chapter is about to begin, the one that could reshape the NDA’s dynamics in one of India’s most politically consequential states. Whatever happens in the coming days, it’s safe to say that Bihar will be watching very closely.
