Recently, the US Virtual Embassy in Iran issued a warning for its American citizens to leave Iran now and maintain a low profile from now onwards. This warning comes ahead of US-Iran nuclear talks in Oman, where both countries are expected to conclude on a positive note, that is, a better & peaceful pact for the citizens of both countries.
According to the official US virtual embassy in Iran website, “U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication, and, if safe to do so, consider departing Iran by land to Armenia or Türkiye.”
The US Virtual Embassy Iran added, “The US government cannot guarantee your safety if you choose to depart using the following options. You should leave only if you believe it is safe to do so.”
The deteriorating US-Iran and Iran-Israel relationships are due to the civil war in Iran and ongoing Israel-Palestine conflicts respectively. That is why, the US Virtual embassy warnings come in a time of heightened security, widespread internet shutdown and continued flights cancellation in Iran.
The US Virtual Embassy has issued the following safety guidelines, urging citizens to exercise maximum vigilance and adhere to these precautionary measures.
1. “Leave Iran now.” Have a plan for departing Iran that does not rely on the United States government’s assistance.
2. Flight cancellations and disruptions are possible so make sure to check with your airlines for updates, without delay.
3. If you can not leave Iran anytime soon, make sure to find a comfortable place inside your residence or some other safe building. Make sure to have a supply of food, water, medicines and other essentials.
4. The US Virtual Embassy recommended its American citizens to keep away from demonstrations, maintain a low profile, and continue to be alert to their surroundings.
5. It advised people to comply with local media for news updates, be equipped to change plans if required, keep their phone’s battery charged, and stay in contact with family and friends to keep them informed.
6. It also asked US-Iranian dual nationals to leave Iran on Iranian passports, as the Iranian government now does not recognise dual nationality.
It further added, “US. citizens who do not have a valid U.S. passport in their possession should apply for one at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate after departing Iran.”
